These classes are kept as small groups (up to 6 people) and are aimed at those with specific problems or needs in common. They are held in the Physiofit Studio. The instructors teaching these classes have specialist knowledge in the area covered.
During pregnancy and childbirth there are many changes to the body of the mother. Pilates is an ideal form of exercise to enable the body to cope with these changes. These classes focus on strengthening the abdominal and pelvic floor muscles, maintaining the flexibility of the spine and limiting alterations in posture as the size of the bump increases. Pilates breathing techniques used during these classes can be useful in labour.
Pilates is recommended by physiotherapists for those suffering with pelvic girdle pain (previously known as Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction or SPD). These classes are a perfect environment for rehabilitation as they are taught by physiotherapists experienced in treating this condition.
The classes are suitable for women at any stage of pregnancy up to the due date. Post natally we accept women back after their 6 week post natal check. As the classes are kept small the instructor can tailor the exercises to suit each individual whatever stage they are at.
As we get older joints get stiffer, muscles get weaker and injuries and illnesses can begin to accumulate. Even people who have worked hard to stay active into older age may find that they begin to become limited in what forms of exercise they can still partake. Pilates is a great way for the older adult to continue to exercise in safe and appropriate way. Many of the problems associated with aging, such as osteoporosis and osteoarthritis can be helped by Pilates exercises. The focus of the class is on maintaining joint mobility, muscle strength and improving posture. Balance exercises are also incorporated to help prevent falls.
We are happy to accommodate people with many health problems including joint replacements, heart and lung conditions and mild mobility problems. Although we do some chair based exercise most participants are able to get down to the floor for mat based exercises as well. We are hoping to offer a purely chair based class in the near future for those who are less mobile.
There are no age limits on the classes, as each person is assessed for suitability on an individual basis. Please ring for a chat if you are interested in joining one of these classes.
These classes offer Pilates based exercises for those suffering injury or health problems that would prevent them from joining a general class. This includes people recovering from injury or joint surgery, and those with neurological conditions such as hemiplegia (after a stroke), Parkinson's or multiple sclerosis. These classes are tailored to each suit each individual's needs therefore we assess each participant on a one to one basis before they are assigned to a group. Each individual's specific rehabilitation exercises can be incorporated into their class.
These classes are for those who would find it impossible to get down on to the floor for mat based work. This might include older adults with mobility problems or those with disabilities. Our studio has full disabled access including a disabled toilet therefore those in wheelchairs are welcome. The exercises are adapted to be done seated or standing and small equipment is used.
This class is currently in the planning stages. Please contact us if you are interested in joining.
